Wreath Across Alaska

Good Afternoon all Worthy Brothers,

We have an exciting and challenging program that stands before each and every one of us:  to place 1,000 wreaths at the graves of our fallen veterans in the National Cemetery at Fort Richardson, plus 300 more in Sitka. This Wreaths Across America is a challenge that I feel confident the Knights of Columbus in Alaska can meet (and should be able to exceed)!

We are fortunate to have GK Marc Balnius take the lead as the Alaska State Council Program Chairman for this endeavor. Marc has had 4 years experience with this program, and he knows the ins, outs and requirements of this honorable program. Marc will get in touch with our ASC Webmaster Mr. Ed to put out as a "news flash" item for a statewide Community project. I expect the District Deputies will contact Marc NLT September 15, and to spread the news to their councils. I would also ask our Alaska District Master Brother George to do the same with our Assemblies.

All monies should be sent in the form of a check made out to " Wreaths Across America", which shall be tendered to our State Treasurer, Brother Ron Rheinhardt.  Monies collected in District 3 councils and assemblies shall go to Sitka. Districts 1, 2, and 4  monies shall be for wreaths for Fort Richardson. The absolute deadline to post checks shall be October 31!   The State Treasurer shall provide Brother Marc and me with a biweekly update of monies collected from our councils/assemblies , starting on September 30, again on October 14 and October 28. A final report needs to be sent to both Chairman Marc and me on November 3, with all checks sent directly to Marc.

Let us all get together behind this endeavor, and grow this program to show Alaskans how KofC honors our fallen veterans who served us so that we can live and remain free.

Vivat Jesus,
State Deputy Mike

The Knights of Columbus in the State of Alaska recently conducted a raffle.  Council 4859 managed the raffle and hosted the drawing. The winner had the option of choosing a small car or $10,000. On December 4 the drawing was conducted in the basement of Holy Family at 2 p m. State Deputy Michael Welch was unable to attend the check presentation  and was represented by District Deputy Les Dennis. Grand Knight Larry Nakata presented the check to Marion Dawag whose father is a member of Council 4859.

Star Council Award

There are eighteen Knights of Columbus Councils in the State of Alaska. It takes a lot of work, teamwork, and persistence to be eligible for the Star Council award. Of the eighteen councils only three qualified in the 2009-2010 fraternal year for the award.  Our Lady of the Snows Council 4859 was one of the three. District Deputy Les Dennis presented the award on 8 December to the Grand Knight Larry Nakata and Trustee Bill Bennet.

June 5, 2010 - News Flash – Knights of Columbus Supreme Board of Directors approves donation to assist with production a television commercial supporting the Alaska Parental Notification Ballot Initiative.

Today the Knights of Columbus Supreme Board of Directors approved a donation of $20,000 from the “Culture of Life” fund to help produce a television commercial supporting the Alaska Parental Notification Initiative.

On June 2nd the Alaska Supreme Court ruled that the Alaska Parental Involvement Act, also known as Ballot Measure 2, can move forward and will be on the August 24th Primary Election.  The measure would forbid a minor from getting an abortion without a doctor informing at least one parent before moving forward with the procedure.

The Knights of Columbus “Culture of Life” fund is a fund managed by Knights of Columbus Charities, Inc. to educate and foster a pro-life Culture of Life.
